Last week Mikey started the 5th Grade. This year he's going to the school in our neighborhood, Walt Disney Elementary. (I've never been in a school before where black & white pictures of Disneyland from to 50s were a key part of the décor!) Cathy has been really anxious about his first time in public school (Mikey's been in Christian school and home school up until now), but Mikey said his first week at Disney was AWESOME! His teacher, Mrs. Sears, is big on reading, so she actually gave him a Roald Dahl book on registration/meet-the-teacher day so he could get started reading it right away. He loved the book! He tore through it as soon as he got home. He even got a 100% on his first homework assignment in "reading and listening!" He's pretty excited about starting computer class next week, too!
And... Mikey's going to be learning to play trumpet this year! We've already rented him his horn, and I showed him what I could remember about how to hold it, how to play it, that sort of thing. He got some books about trumpet from the library, and I printed him a fingering chart of notes and of a C scale so he could play around with that. I showed him a squinchy tone and then a nicer tone (I never really played trumpet on a regular basis, so my tone was still a LITTLE squinchy, but the point was to show the contrast). Unfortunately, at the moment he still generally sounds a little bit like the baby duck in the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons, but that will change quickly when band class starts. On the way home from renting the instrument, I was like, "Mikey, you'll need to go in your room and close the door to practice." Cathy was like, "I don't mind if he practices in the living room!" When we got home, Mikey took out the trumpet in the living room, and within 30 seconds he had traumatized the dog, terrified his sister, and changed Cathy's mind about where he would practice. :)
So so far, Mikey seems to really be enjoying his new school. He's looking forward to his second week. It's going to be a great year!

End of May Update
Wow... way too long without an update! Well, Hannah's doing fine... she took some antibiotics and some Robitussin and a breathing treatment or five, and now she's back to her regular self. One day, though, she was having trouble eating because she couldn't breathe and eat at the same time, and she got angrier than I've ever seen her get. She's usually very even-tempered. So we're really glad she's feeling better!
School ended for Tulsa Public Schools last Friday; we set up Mikey's schedule to match Tulsa Public, but he actually hasn't finished all his assignments yet so he's still "in school". Probably he'll finish tomorrow.
Yesterday at church we got to see some friends we haven't seen in quite a while... Mike & Amy! We love those guys! :)
Today we got to get our air conditioner fixed. I say that as though it was a privilege to pay $360 to a stranger for hanging out in your back yard for a couple of hours. Actually, though, it is a privilege to sleep with cool air again! We've been sweating it for several days. We got a crack in the pipes and lost a little freon, and you know how that goes. No freon, no cool air! But now we're good.
Finally... and we'd like to invite anyone who's reading this on Thursday or Friday... tomorrow night we're going to a cool new thing at Grace called "Friday Night F.U.E.L." and it's kind of a karaoke and games night. Free to anyone who wants to show up! Cathy and I are all pumped to do a duet we've been working on. If you're in town on May 29, come on out at 7pm and maybe you'll get to hear us sing!

BFW (Big Fun Weekend)
Wow... what an unexpectedly full weekend!
Saturday after building a Mr. Potatohead-style pumpkinhead with Papaw Jones at Lowe's and going to Mikey's soccer game (which his team won 3-0... no shootout this week!), he and I went home and had a little downtime with Hannah while Mama made a grocery run, and then we all went out to a pumpkin patch. Out there Cathy picked out a couple of little pumpkins for the kids to have for I don't know, Pumpkin Season or something (hey, aren't those supposed to rise out of the pumpkin patch on their own?). Mikey got to slide down the giant blowup slide they had out there, while Hannah and I discovered a ride of her own... leaning the stroller aaaaaaaalllllll the way back until Hannah's head is almost on the ground WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! and then tilting back forward WOOOOOOOOOO! hehehehehe. (That last hehe was Hannah giggling when the stroller is back level.) After that we had dinner at the revived-again Casa Bonita on 21st & Sheridan and then went over to Papaw Angel's house for a bit and Mikey got to hang out with his little black dog Skipper. Mikey is sometimes nervous around dogs that are excitable, and Skipper is one of those super-friendly dogs that just wants to be all up in your business. Papaw has been in the habit of locking Skip up in his carrier whenever Mikey comes over, but this time Mikey and Skipper got to have some quality time together and I don't think Mikey's scared at all now.
Sunday we actually skipped out on the second service (BOOOO ON US!!!) to blow out of town to OKC to visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Mikey has been studying cowboys in his schoolwork, and the museum was actually mentioned in the curriculum. I had mentioned it to Cathy as a good location for a "field trip" quite some time ago, but it didn't sink in until it actually came up in the curriculum. Anyway, we went on out and had a great time! Mikey especially liked the "Children's Corral" area and the huge beautiful garden out back (the weather could hardly have been more perfect, although it was kind of windy... it was sunny and warm enough to be comfortable but not sweaty), and he particularly got a charge out of throwing twigs into the little strem they have running through the garden area and watching it go over the mini waterfalls. Not that cowboy-ish, but definitely kid-ish! His other favorite part is the little Western town, "Prosperity Junction", that is actually inside the museum. You can go inside most of the buildings and see antiques from the Old West, and kind of get a flavor of how it might have been back then. I've been to something similar at the East Texas Oil Museum, which we hope to get to visit as well once he gets to the unit on energy. Hannah enjoyed Prosperity Junction because she discovered that there was a pretty pronounced echo in the room. She kept going "AH!" and then listening for the echo. By the time we got done in Prosperity Junction she had gotten to where she would make an echo and then applaud herself... clapping her hands is a new thing she's picked up recently.
We also went through the areas about old-time and modern cowboy life, Western heroes in entertainment, rodeo, the army, and more. Oh... did I mention the several HUMONGOUS statues that they have in the place? I kept seeing pictures of the statue of a cowboy on a horse in the entrance atrium (it's called "End of the Trail") but didn't realize how HUGE the thing is until I saw a picture of it with people next to it! It's amazing, as are the other beautiful statues in the place.
Anyway, we had the perfect amount of time to take in the museum, and then we stopped by Cracker Barrel on the way home (to kind of maintain the cowboy theme a little!) and then came on home and went to bed. It was a great family time! We're going to research some of the other museums, in Tulsa as well as in OKC, and try and do a Saturday like this every month.

Home School
Today marks the first day of Mikey's second week of school. We're trying something different this year: after three years of private Christian school, this year for third grade we're home-schooling him using Switched-On Schoolhouse, which was recommended to us by several friends. The lessons are all (with the exception of science experiments) on the computer, and they include videos and songs and games, and Mikey is having a great time with it so far. Here's a picture of him busy at his lessons:

Uh-oh. Wait a second. Maybe I should give Mommy a call and get her to check up on him! Wait a second... what's that on the TV in the background??

Movies & Kids
So... what's the deal with showing movies to my kid?
Mikey just turned eight years old. My wife and I try to keep some control over the media he sees. We carefully consider the movies we let him watch... for example, some friends of ours want to go see Iron Man this weekend with us, but we want to check our "family movie review sites" list (see below for the list) so we'll know what we're up against before we take him to see it. Although he had already seen all of the other Star Wars movies, we pre-screened and thought long and hard about Revenge of the Sith before we took him to see it because of Anakin, you know, bursting into flames and all. (We ultimately took him, and he loved it... and no nightmares afterward. he understood the good/evil aspects of it, I think.) I cringe every time a new Shrek movie comes out because of the slightly off-color jokes and homosexual double entendres. At home we have a special DVD player that we can use to seamlessly "clean up" things that we wouldn't approve of him watching without compromising the movie's story (think: automatic "network TV" version). He knows which shows on TV that he's not allowed to watch, and if one of them comes on he won't watch it (yep, he's a great kid!) Grandparents ask our permission to let him watch movies. And yet still he sees things that we wouldn't approve of. How is this possible?
This morning Mikey told me that he saw Horton Hears a Who! at school. I was incredulous... is that even out on DVD? I asked him if it was the computer-animated one like Ice Age or the cartoon one like the old How The Grinch Stole Christmas. He told me enough detail that I'm convinced that he actually did see the 2008 theatrical version... we haven't even seen it as a family, so I actually had to look it up and find some obscure details to ask him about (he knew them). I looked it up on Amazon.com... you can't buy it on DVD yet. Sometimes you can rent movies before you can buy them... he tells me the teacher said she rented it. His teacher is not the "illegally downloading movies off the Internet" type, so I have to believe she got it legitimately somehow. But how? (Maybe she had a wonderful, awful idea... oh wait. That's the wrong Dr. Seuss story...)
The first time I learned that Mikey was seeing movies at school was when he told me they had watched Transformers. That movie was one I actually specifically wanted to avoid letting him see because of some sexually-suggestive things in the movie. When the movie had just come out, my brother IMd me one day and told me he had seen the movie and it was great. (This was before I had read up on it.) "Cool! Someone else told me they liked it," I said. "Nothing bad for the kiddies, then?" His reply was: "woah...no, I didn't say take Mikey. I said it rocked." My brother is no prude, but even he cautioned me on that movie. And yet they apparently watched it at Mikey's Christian school, presumably with masturbation jokes and other and sexual humor intact. Something is weird here. (For the record, we probably would have watched it at home eventually with the Clearplay DVD player, but that's neither here nor there.)
They watch movies on special occasions at church, too. Once a month we have a special service on a Sunday night, and often they run long, so in the children's church they'll show a movie. A year or so ago when I first found out about this I asked our children's pastor if he could let the parents know what movie was coming up in case it was something we didn't approve of. He told me that he carefully pre-screens every movie and they're all OK. So no early notices of what movie is coming up have materialized. Now, it's my church, my "family", so in general I'm very comfortable with what is considered appropriate or not, but this is my kid here. Wouldn't it be courteous to let me know about something as potentially controversial as a movie showing?
(I won't even go into the fact that every DVD on the market has a incarceration-serious warning that it is illegal to show the DVD in public.)
Worse is the fact that the good folks at Mikey's church and at his school (and they are good folks) apparently have not considered the possibility that even if I do approve of the movie, maybe I would like to share that movie-viewing experience with my son instead of him seeing the movie for the first time with someone else. I suppose by the time something is out on DVD presumably people have gone to see it in movie theaters, but often we don't financially have the luxury of paying $20-25 to see something in a theater when we could wait three months and get it for $5 from Blockbuster, or sometimes free from the library.
So I appear to have more or less lost control of my child's movie-viewing experiences. I knew this would happen eventually, but I kind of hoped for it to be when his age had reached the double digits. Maybe I'm old-fashioned... the first time I saw an R-rated movie I was in college and went with friends, and if I had realized ahead of time that it was R-rated I probably wouldn't have watched it. But it seems like the people I trust with my little boy could have a little more respect for my discretion about something like that.
My list of family movie review sites:
Plugged In movies section - from Focus on the Family
Christian Spotlight on Entertainment movies section
Kids-In-Mind
Screen It! Movie Reviews - used to be more useful before they went to a subscriber model, but still some good info
By glancing through the information on these four sites, you can know basically anything that is going to happen in a movie that might surprise, embarrass, or otherwise upset you if your kids see it. You will also know almost everything about the movie's basic plot and you may run into spoilers, so if you prefer to be surprised, better just go pre-screen it yourself.
You might also want to look up some movies you've watched that you consider "okay" to get some perspective. You might find that some of these sites are less relaxed about content than you are. You also might be shocked to see how corrupt some of the stuff in kid movies looks when you consider it in the light of day instead of the dark of a theater!

That Mikey sure knows how to party!
Whew! What a Saturday!

Mikey's 8th birthday was really fun! After we all got up and got dressed, we went to Reasor's and picked up Mikey's cake (which had soccer players on it) and then we went to Cici's to get the party ready. Mama had called ahead so they knew we were coming, and when we got there the manager was already setting up tables for us. Daddy had to go home to pick up some matches to light his shirt sleeve... I mean, to light the candles, and when he got back Meme and Papaw Jones were there eating. A bunch of Mikey's friends from school came to the party... even his teacher Ms. Fadare showed up! Also, Jacob and Jonathan, two sons of a childhood friend of Cathy's who are friends of Mikey's, came with their dad Chris. Everybody kind of arrived and left at different times, but most everybody ate some pizza and cake and had a great time. You can get to pictures of the event by clicking on the thumbnails on the right, or you can click here to go directly to the whole set.
Mikey's soccer team had a game afterward, and several of Mikey's school friends (and Ms. Fadare!) came to the game as well. As it turns out, the team played a great game! They've had a problem with not playing very aggressive soccer, but for some reason this time they were going after the ball a lot more and giving the other team a run for their money. In fact, they scored their first goal of the season! Ms. Fadare was about to jump out of her skin, she was so excited... they've been praying in school for Mikey's soccer team to play their best for Mikey's birthday, and they did a great job. They gave the parents on the sidelines something to cheer for!
After the game we went home and got freshened up, and we drove down to the Red Robin just across the river from Jenks to get some dinner. (The food was great, but we never got to see Red himself... what's up with that?) Mikey got a free sundae for his birthday, and his newly-8-year-old mind mused over the idea of eating a "sundae" on "Saturday." I suggested that next Saturday we should do so at TGI Friday's and maybe the space-time continuum would be rent in two. Or something like that.
Hannah, as always, found something to amuse herself: she spent the whole time staring at a ceiling fan.
Anyway, we finished eating and I dropped Mikey and Cathy off at Mabee Center for the Blue Man Group concert. Cathy will not drive after dark ("I can't see in the dark!!" "Sweetie, that's because it's dark. Nobody can see the dark... that's why we use headlights.") so I went over to her dad's house and we watched The Game Plan, which had been recommended to me by my mom and dad and which turned out to be a very cute movie which for some reason was punctuated at random intervals by a crying sound. Oh, wait... that was Hannah wanting a bottle, wanting a fresh diapie, wanting to be the center of attention, etc. etc. etc. Ah, a father's life is never done.
We enjoyed the movie anyway, and apparently Mikey and Cathy had a terrific time at the BMG show! Mikey tells me he's going to write a blog post about the show so the whole world will know what goes on at Blue Man Group concerts... so stay tuned for that soon!
Mikey had so much fun on his birthday! It was a packed-full day, but it was worth it. It was a blast!
